New Delhi: The newly elected ICC Chairman Jay Shah will hold the first meeting with all the board members on Thursday, December 5. Shah took over the role of ICC Chairman on December 1 from Greg Barclay and will hold a pre-planned meeting with all the 16 board members, as per reports. However, the future of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will not be on priority as it’s all about the new ICC chairman being introduced to the board members.
Pakistan have already spoken on the hosting matter of the Champions Trophy 2025 in the previous meeting with the ICC board members. PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) took a step back on their firm stance of not accepting any hybrid model for the tournament but the PCB also want the same model for any upcoming ICC events in India.
As per the reports, PCB’s demand was denied by all the board members present in the meeting, including 12 full member nations, three associate nations and the ICC Chairman. All the stakeholders refused to give anything in writing to the Pakistan Cricket Board which provides them with the right to not travel to India for any future ICC tournaments. Hence, the PCB doesn’t have much left to say on the entire matter and will have to accept the demands of all other board members.
Only two scenarios are possible if Pakistan decide to stay firm on its stance and go against all board members. The first scenario could be that the ICC Champions Trophy takes place without Pakistan in another country and with some other team replacing them. The second scenario is that the entire Champions Trophy is cancelled but it will be a huge task for the ICC to find another window in the remaining year to conduct the tournament.
Upcoming ICC tournaments in India
After the Champions Trophy 2025, India is scheduled to host the 2026 T20 World Cup along with Sri Lanka, the 2029 Champions Trophy and the 2031 ODI World Cup jointly with Bangladesh. Given that Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are the co-hosts of two main ICC events, Pakistan can play their tournament games out of India. The only talking point could be just the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup and 2029 Champions Trophy which India will host entirely.
