Happy Birthday Shikhar Dhawan: A look at five records held by former India opener

New Delhi: Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan is celebrating his 39th birthday on December 5, today. Dhawan is known for his stunning stroke play and has delivered many match-winning performances for Team India. He made his international debut in 2010 and was the highest run-getter in the 2013 Champions Trophy, scoring 363 runs in five matches.

He last played for India in December 2022 against Bangladesh and after two years of absence from the national team, Dhawan announced his retirement in August 2024. After retirement, he played for the Gujarat Greats in Legends League Cricket (LLC) and recently made his debut in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) for the Karnali Yaks Star.

Five records held by Shikar Dhawan

Highest score by Indian on Test debut: Shikhar Dhawan made his Test debut in the third match against Australia at PCA Stadium in Mohali on March 14, 2013. He scored 187 runs off 174 balls in the first inning with the help of two maximums and 33 boundaries. His score of 187 runs is still the record for most runs on a Test debut by an Indian batter.

Fastest 100 on Test debut: Dhawan also holds the record for scoring the fastest century on Test debut. He took just 85 balls to reach the 100-run mark in the Test against Australia in Mohali.

Most runs for India in Champions Trophy: Dhawan made his Champions Trophy debut for India in 2013 and finished the tournament as the highest run-getter. He was also part of the Indian team during the 2017 Champions Trophy and has scored 701 runs in 10 matches across two editions. He holds the record for most runs by an Indian batter in the ICC Champions Trophy and is in third position on the list of most runs scored in the tournament after Chris Gayle (791) and Mahela Jayawardene (742).

Most 4s in IPL: Dhawan has scored 6769 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is the second-leading run scorer of the tournament history. He holds the record for smashing most fours in the league. He smacked 768 boundaries in 222 IPL matches. Virat Kohli is in second position on the list with 705 fours in 252 matches.

Most runs for India in single edition of U-19 World Cup: Dhawan was in sensational form for India in the 2004 U-19 World Cup. He amassed 505 runs in seven matches, which is the record for most runs by an Indian batter in a single edition of the tournament.
