New Delhi: Rohit Sharma ended the suspense over his batting position in the second Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval in the pre-match press conference on Thursday, December 5. The Indian skipper, who missed the first Test at Perth, is back to lead the Indian side for the pink-ball Test starting on Friday, December 6. While it was clear that he would replace stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah as the skipper of the side in the second Test, there was a huge suspense over his batting position.
With KL Rahul, the replacement opener, performing brilliantly in the series opener at the Optus Stadium, the Indian team management was caught in a massive dilemma over the choice of Yashashvi Jaiswal’s opening partner – Who should open in Adelaide: Rohit – the regular opener or Rahul – the in-form opener.
Rahul, when asked about his batting position during the press conference on Wednesday, kept the cards close to his chest but his skipper Rohit ended the suspense on Thursday.
“He (Rahul) will be opening the innings, and I will bat somewhere in the middle,” Rohit confirmed during the pre-match press conference on the eve of the second Test.
Rahul was rewarded for his superb performance in the series opener at Perth. The Karnataka batter looked in sublime touch with scores of 26 and 77. Rahul and his centurion opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal combined for a 201-run opening stand during the second inning to help India win by 295 runs.
Rohit, the team man, leads from the front
Rohit took the call to drop himself down the order for the greater good and in an effort to go with the perfect combination in the Adelaide Test to continue the momentum. Returning to the playing X1 from a paternity break, Rohit took the tough call of pushing himself down the order to accommodate an in-form opening pair of Rahul and Jaiswal.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill will also be back in the side after recovering from a thumb injury.
