New Delhi: Mumbai recorded the highest chase in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 on Thursday after they beat Andhra Pradesh to qualify for the knockouts in Hyderabad. Chasing a record target of 230 runs, Mumbai rode on Ajinkya Rahane’s 95-run knock to complete a 4-wicket victory in emphatic manner.
After pipping Andhra, Mumbai now hold the top spot in Group E and this win knocked out Kerala out of SMAT 2024 who had the possibility of qualification had Andhra won. Meanwhile, Andhra, batting first were superb with their performance as they amassed a high total of 229/4 in the stipulated 20 overs, with Srikar Bharat emerging as their top-scorer with an unbeaten knock of 93 runs.
Apart from Bharat, skipper Ricky Bhui and opener Ashwin Hebbar showcased their batting masterclass with knocks of 68 and 52 respectively. Mumbai bowlers could not do much with the ball and were successful in taking just 4 wickets in the innings. The three batters did the bulk of the scoring for the side which helped Andhra pile up a massive total in the first innings.
Mumbai off to rollicking start in chase
In reply, Mumbai started off the chase in a fiery manner with Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane plundering boundaries inside the powerplay. While Shaw fell on 34, Rahane continued the amazing work and went on to score a terrific knock 95 runs off just 54 balls. Enroute his knock, he smashed nine boundaries and four maximums to do the majority work for Mumbai.
Skipper Shreyas Iyer scored 25 runs while big-hitting batter Shivam Dube also smashed 34 runs in the chase while Suryansh Shedge closed the game for Mumbai with an unbeaten 7-ball 26-run cameo. Mumbai broke the previous high of a 227-run chase by Pondicherry against Andhra in 2021.
