Bowled a bit fuller with pink ball: Starc spills plan to trouble Indian batters

New Delhi: Neither he nor Australia did anything out of the ordinary in their day-night Test win in Adelaide over India, insisted Mitchell Starc after their 10-wicket victory that levelled up the Border-Gavaskar series 1-1 after two days.

Australia had slumped to a 295-run loss in the first Test at Perth, leading to a lot of criticism from former players. But in the pink-ball Test at Adelaide, where Australia won their eight consecutive match, they swatted India by 10 wickets.

“There was a lot of outside noise after the game but we left Perth in Perth. Cannot really put my finger on it,” Starc said after Australia’s win.

The left-arm quick has an impressive record in pink ball matches and he lived up to his billing, claiming a match haul of 8/108, including six wickets in the first innings.

“Nothing changes in my approach. Probably slightly fuller lengths. It (pink ball) is more like the white ball than the red ball.

“We were really positive with bat and ball and got the rewards. It’s nice when the ball hits the stumps,” Starc said.

The 34-yer-old praised skipper Pat Cummins for being his guiding light as a bowlers, helping him add skills to enhance his arsenal ans accuracy.

“I have been learning a lot from Pat Cummins over the last seven years or so. So I have added to my bow the one that goes away and still able to bring one back, he added.

“I always had that air speed and swing but I have also been someone who leaked a bit. Developing the wobble seam helped me improve my accuracy over the years. To be able to have the longevity is putting that hard yards in that people don’t always see.”

‘Amazing Starc’

Cummins returned the complement, lauding his ability to produce game-altering spells, while also parsing Travis Head for tilting the balance of the match towards Australia with his explosive second innings century.

“He’s amazing. He’s been doing it for over a decade. I feel very lucky and privileged to have him in the team,” the skipper said.

“That’s a great week for us. We were far from the team we wanted to be in Perth, but this was much better. It’s always good to contribute with a few wickets myself.

“Head loves batting here. The game could have gone either way when he walked in, but he shifted the momentum in our favour.”
