Chhetri shared that announcing his retirement before the match brought a sense of relief but made the weeks leading up to it difficult. He felt he owed this clarity to his fans, ensuring they knew the significance of his farewell game. Although India drew 0-0 with Kuwait, Chhetri played the full 90 minutes, receiving an emotional farewell from the crowd.
The Bengaluru FC star also spoke about his retirement video, revealing it was completed in a single take. “This whole video was one take. I sat, spoke, and walked out. Everyone present, including the cameraman, had tears,” he shared, showcasing the deep emotions behind the moment.
Chhetri’s illustrious career began in 2002 with Mohun Bagan. Over two decades, he helped India achieve milestones, including winning the Nehru Cup thrice, several SAFF Championships, and the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, which secured India’s spot in the AFC Asian Cup after 27 years.
With 94 goals in 150 matches, Chhetri ranks fourth in all-time international goal scorers, cementing his legacy in Indian football.
