Did you know the first American to win a Nobel Prize was a President?

New Delhi: Normally, we expect scientists or authors or economists or someone working for peace to get Nobel Prize. Make no mistake, there are other people who have and will continue to get the Nobel Prize. But when former US President Theodore Roosevelt received it as the first ever American to get the honour, there was a ripple of controversy. It was for the first time that the Nobel Prize lost its charm to many people.

Theodore Roosevelt and overcoming obstacles through hardship

As a child, Theodore Roosevelt was always sick with debilitating asthma but through strenuous lifestyle he overcame the health problems. He studied at home before going to the Harvard College and he became a popular writer and historian thanks to his book “The Naval War of 1812”.

Life seldom was easy for Theodore Roosevelt which is evident from the fact that he lost his mother and first wife on the same night. He was engaged in several works before leading the Rough Riders, which fought the Spanish Army in Cuba to great publicity. Roosevelt returned a war hero and in 1898 was elected the Governor of New York. In the 1900 presidential election, Republicans convinced McKinley to choose him as his running mate and the McKinley-Roosevelt ticket won a landslide victory.

Theodore Roosevelt: As the US President

After the assassination of President McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, who was 42 years old at that time became the youngest President in the history of the US. He brought new excitement to the Presidency, as he vigorously led the US towards a strong foreign policy and progressive reforms. He was of the opinion that the President was a “steward of the people” and should do everything for the good of the public unless expressly forbidden by law or the Constitution.

He ensured the construction of the Panama Canal. He prioritized conservation and established national parks, forests, and monuments to preserve US natural resources.

Theodore Roosevelt: The Nobel Prize

Theodore Roosevelt was given the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating peace in the Russo-Japanese war in 1904-5. He also resolved a dispute with Mexico by resorting to arbitration. Notably, he was not just the first American to win the Nobel Prize but also the first statesman to be awarded the Peace Prize.

And immediately, controversy gripped the Nobel Prize for the first time. The Left parties in Norway called Roosevelt a “military mad” imperialist. The newspapers in Sweden wrote that Alfred Nobel was turning in his grave, and that Norway awarded the Peace Prize to Roosevelt in order to win powerful friends.
