Mohammed Shami unlikely to join Team India in Australia anytime soon, here’s why

New Delhi: Indian pacer Mohammed Shami is unlikely to be on a flight to Australia anytime soon for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Shami has played eight matches on the trot for Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024 which is currently underway in India. The pacer has bowled for overs regularly in the domestic T20 tournament and has done well for Bengal.

However, there continues to remain suspense on when will Shami link up with the rest of the India squad in Australia, if at all. When asked about Shami’s comeback, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma revealed the senior pacer has suffered a fresh setback as he has a swollen knee despite turning up for Bengal regularly in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Rohit insisted the door is open for Shami to return to the team and that his fitness and bowling workload are being monitored by the medical staff at the NCA. As per a report in the Indian Express, Shami is not yet close to leaving for Australia anytime soon for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and certainly won’t be joining the Indian squad before the 3rd Test in Brisbane which gets underway on Saturday, December 14.

As per the report, Shami recently underwent a fresh fitness test and there is no indication from the Bengal camp that the pacer will be boarding a flight to Australia anytime soon. He is currently taking part in Bengal’s quarter-final clash against Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 on Wednesday where he remained wicket-less in his first three overs.

How has Mohammed Shami performed in SMAT 2024?

Shami has so far been a consistent performer for Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 so far with 9 wickets from as many matches. The senior pacer has shown no signs of slowing down due to his recent comeback from a long-term injury break and has been bowling well.

He smashed an unbeaten 32 with the bat and finished with figures of 1/25 off his 4 overs with the ball to play an instrumental role in helping Bengal Chandigarh in the pre-quarterfinal of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Monday. Shami also played a Ranji game for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh on his comeback where he picked up 7 wickets.

Despite having played 8 matches on the trot in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami is reportedly unlikely to travel to Australia anytime soon for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
