India’s women entrepreneurs: 30 million+ new businesses possible

New Delhi: India has the potential to create more than 30 million new women-owned enterprises, KPMG said at the TiE Global Summit 2024. The report further stated that boosting venture capital (VC) funding in women-led startups in India can help in enhancing gender equality. This would also enable women entrepreneurs to expand their businesses, create employment, and contribute to the economy.

“More than 20 per cent of India’s MSME startups were by women-led ventures and 45 per cent of these came from tier II and III cities,” said Akhilesh Tuteja, Client’s and Market Partner, KPMG, at the TiE Global Summit 2024 in Bengaluru.

The report of KPMG stated the ‘democratisation of entrepreneurship in India’ can help generate 150 to 170 million more jobs in the country. Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry data states that the government has supported around 1,52,139 startups and half of these now have at least one woman director.

The details of various programs under taken by the Government to promote startups across the country are: Startup India Action Plan, Startup India, Startup India Seed Fund Scheme, Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS) Scheme, Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups, Self-Certification under Labour and Environmental laws, Income Tax Exemption for 3 years, Support for Intellectual Property Protection, International Market Access to Indian Startups, National Startup Advisory Council, National Startup Awards, States’ Startup Ranking Framework and other initiatives.
