New Delhi: In the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks, possibly the biggest terrorist attack perpetrated in India, we lost some brave men who had served our country with courage and honesty. Hemant Karkare was one of the martyrs of the terrorist attack, but he went down fighting and ensured that the terrorists were thwarted on their tracks in the financial capital of India. The early life of Hemant Karkare
Hemant Karkare was born on December 12, 1954, in Nagpur. He did his schooling in Wardha and Nagpur and got a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1975. After graduation, he became an employee of the National Productivity Council of the Indian government and then Hindustan Unilever Ltd.
He joined the 1982 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS). He was the Joint Commissioner of Mumbai Police before becoming the ATS Chief of Maharashtra in January 2008. He also served seven years in Austria as a RAW agent and he was regarded as a very influential officer in police circles.

On September 8, 2006, several bomb blasts took place in Maharashtra’s Malegaon. On September 29, three bombs exploded in Gujarat’s Modasa and Maharashtra’s Malegaon which killed eight people and injured 80. Many unexploded bombs were found in Gujarat and Hemant Karkare, as the Anti-Terror Squad chief in Maharashtra, led the 2008 Malegaon blasts investigation and he invited a lot of criticism and heat in the case.

The terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008 were several coordinated attacks in which 10 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, carried out shooting and bombing in Mumbai for four days. The attacks, which shocked the world, started on November 26 and lasted until November 29, 2008. It killed 175 people including nine of the attackers and injured more than 300 people.
Karkare and senior police officials Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar along with four constables were informed that IPS officer Sadanand Date was injured in the gunfire of the terrorists at the Cama and Albless Hospital which was for women and children. They were at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus which was ten minutes away from the hospital.
They proceeded to the hospital in a Toyota Qualis which Salaskar was driving, Karkare was in the second row, Kamte was in the passenger seat and the four constables were in the back seat. Jadhav, one of the constables said that after five minutes, two terrorists came out from behind a tree, with one of them being Ajmal Kasab and fired at them with AK-47 automatic rifles. Apart from Jadhav, the others in the car were killed. Kamte retaliated and wounded terrorist Kasab in the arm. The terrorists dumped the bodies and took the car to go to the Metro Cinema. They would be eventually nabbed and in 2009, Karkare was posthumously given the Ashoka Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantry decoration in India.
