New Delhi: Swedish prosecutors on Thursday have confirmed that they have dropped a rape investigation launched with French football star Kylian Mbappe’s visit to Stockholm in October. Mbappe’s representatives had already called the allegations “false” and defamatory “rumour”.
Lead investigator Marina Chirakova issued a statement stating that there was a lack of evidence for the investigation to progress further. The investigation in question was centred around an incident at a hotel in Sweden’s capital city. Chirakova noted that there was a certain person who was suspected on “reasonable grounds” for rape and dual cases of sexual assault.

However, Chirakova concluded that the evidence wasn’t enough to indict the individual and hence, the case was closed. Chirakova’s statement concluded that the person of interest hadn’t been notified yet of any “suspicion of a crime.” The prosecutors had never mentioned the name of the suspect in the investigation.
Still, multiple Swedish media outlets had reported the Real Madrid striker was the suspect who was visiting the country during the international break, in order to recover from injury. Both Mbappe and his legal representatives had dismissed the allegations. His lawyer, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, and representatives haven’t responded to the new development of the case yet.
Mbappe, in a recent interview, expressed his surprise about being at the centre of such an investigation and that he hadn’t been approached by the Swedish authorities. Mbappe had noted that it may not have “weighed” on him but it was certainly unexpected.
Since moving to Real, Mbappe has been criticized for not performing up to the mark and even not fitting in the La Liga squad. However, he has managed to score for the side in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. His recent exploits in the Champions League have helped Los Blancos climb to 20th on the table as the defending champions look for a place in the knockout stage of the tournament.
