New Delhi: Indian batter Shubman Gill delivered a special message to Grandmaster D Gukesh on becoming the youngest world chess champion. The Chennai-based chess player defeated China’s Ding Liren in the classical 14-series format by a margin of 7.5-6.5.
It culminated in the most unexpected outcome with Gukesh capitalising on the blunder move by Liren in the end of the game. At the age of 18 years, eight months, and 14 days, the Indian became the youngest ever world champion, bettering former world champion Garry Kasparov of Russia’s feat (22 years, six months and 27 days).
Gill, who is currently in Australia to play the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, congratulated the 18-year-old for his accomplishment.
“I want to congratulate D Gukesh on behalf of the entire Indian cricket team. To become the youngest World Chess Champion is a feat in itself,” Gill said in a press conference ahead of the third Test in Brisbane.

Gukesh doesn’t want to touch trophy before closing ceremony
D Gukesh got the attention of the World Chess Championship trophy on Friday, but the youngster decided not to touch it and wait for the moment during the closing ceremony later in the day.
“Seeing it up close for the first time… I don’t want to touch it, I want to lift it at the closing ceremony!” Gukesh could be heard saying in a small clip posted by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
Gukesh became the second Indian after legendary player Viswanathan Anand to bag the world championship, the latter won it five times in his illustrious professional career. A video of Gukesh, at the age of 11, manifesting to become the youngest world champion went viral across social media platforms.
“I’ve been dreaming about this and living this moment since I was 6 or 7. Every chess player wants to live this moment. I am living my dream,” Gukesh said after his win on Thursday.
Gukesh will return to India at the end of the weekend and is expected to receive a warm welcome from his home crowd in Chennai.
