Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin announces mammoth cash prize for chess champion D Gukesh

New Delhi: Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh etched his name in the history books on Thursday after he became the youngest world chess champion. Gukesh, hailing from Chennai, beat title-holder Ding Liren of China in a hard-fought contest which went down to the wire but saw Gukesh coming up as a stronger player. Gukesh with this miraculous victory fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming the youngest chess champion in the world.

A day later on Friday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin recognised the remarkable achievement of the Chennai teenager and announced a hefty prize money of Rs 5 crore for Gukesh. In a post on social media site X, the Tamil Nadu CM wrote: To honour the monumental achievement of @DGukesh, the youngest-ever World Chess Champion, I am delighted to announce a cash prize of ₹5 crore! Stalin also said that the youngster has brought immense pride and joy to the nation.

Gukesh’s miraculous victory

D Gukesh kept his hopes alive for a title-winning victory throughout the 14 games he played against title-holder Liren. Out of the total contests, 9 ended in a draw, with Liren winning 2 and Gukesh claiming victory in 3 games. In the FIDE world chess championship final in Singapore on Thursday, the teenager from Chennai bagged the title with a 7.5-6.5 score in the final game, establishing his position as a global chess sensation.
