UEFA Euro 2024: A Disappointing campaign for Laliga top scorer Artem Dobvyk

New Delh: The last few months have been a complete rollercoaster ride for Artem Dobvyk, who went from being Laliga top scorer to a disappointing figure for Ukraine at Euro 2024 campaign. The 27-year-old Girona striker was expected to be the talisman for Ukraine this campaign after a fabulous season in laliga where he helped Girona make history, qualifying for the champions league and finishing third, their best ever position.

The Ukranian striker scored a total of 24 goals, most in the league by any player and looked lively in each of his games, scoring big goals against top Laliga sides such as Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. However, expectations were big when he joined the Ukranian squad for Euro 2024, but his season turned into a complete disappointment. Dobvyk failed to score in any of the group stage matches after starting each of them having taken just six shots on target throughout the campaign. These stats looked concerning for a player scoring for fun in the Spanish league.

Worrying performances for Ukraine

Ukraine’s opening match against Romania was a complete disaster for the centre forward. During the entire match, Dobvyk only had 24 touches and just one shot on target. He looked absent througout the ninety minutes that suggested he needed to up his game in the next encounter against Slovakia.

However, despite Ukraine making a comeback to edge past the Slovakians, Dobvyk had a below par performance yet again as he failed to score or even contribute to any of the goals that were scored in that game. Another poor performance where he had just 16 touches throughout the game, suggesting his lack of involvement in the game.

His final game against Belgium saw him take three shots towards the goal, which was a decent improvement for the 27-year-old striker as he looked much more lively than the previous two matches. Despite having just 21 touches in that game, the Ukranian forward showed some good movement to create spaces for his team mates but his lack of goals and any sort of attacking threat caused some major concerns for his side and it was certainly one of many other reasons behind Ukraine’s disappointing campaign.

Artem Dobvyk was expected to lead Ukraine to the Euro knockout stages, but the Laliga top scorer failed to make a single goal contribution for Ukraine as they crash out of the campaign.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
