Indian diaspora in Singapore celebrates D Gukesh’s historic world chess victory

New Delhi: Newly-crowned world chess champion D Gukesh was felicitated by the Indian community in Singapore on Saturday for his emphatic victory. Chennai teenager Gukesh became the youngest-ever player to win the world chess championship title on Thursday, after he beat Chinese title-holder Ding Liren.

Both the players faced each other in a fourteen-game classical chess match. Meanwhile, a reception was organised by the Indian High Commission in Singapore and the young chess sensation was felicitated by about 150 members of the Indian community, led by High Commissioner Dr Shilpak Ambule.

We are proud of Gukesh: Envoy

Speaking on the occasion, the High Commissioner said that they all are proud of Gukesh and the win. It was his win no matter what others say. The envoy also wished the young champions many wins in his future. During the course of the event, the world chess champion clicked photographs with all the members of the Indian community.

Shiwani Khirwal, President of BiJhar Singapore, a society of the Bihari and Jharkhand community in the city-state, also congratulated Gukesh on the remarkable achievement, acknowledging the moment as a magical one.  “We are proud of his win. It was very magical moment, his calm and focussed approach won him the championship,”.

The homemaker, who has been in Singapore for the last 16 years, said that entire youth should learn to be calm and focus on their efforts as they approach a life long journey. Sandhya Singh, a professor at the National Univerity of Singapore, said, “It was wonderful win. The Indian diaspora is proud of the win in the city state…he is an inspiration to the global youths.”

Out of the total 14 matches, 9 ended in a draw while Gukesh won 3 of them, including the final. Chinese Liren, on the other hand, claimed victories in two games.
