New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh captain Rajat Patidar was left fuming after a wrong decision by the third umpire in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy final on Sunday, December 15. Patidar batted brilliantly and scored an unbeaten 81 runs off 40 balls to take MP to a good total of 174/8. He smashed six boundaries and six maximums during his explosive knock.
At one point, MP were struggling to score runs and it seemed like they would settle for a below-par total, but Patidar played a good knock to keep the team’s hope alive. On the last ball of the final over, a controversy unfolded on the field due to a wide call by the on-field umpire. Mumbai were upset with the umpire’s call and decided to review the decision.
The ball pitched outside the popping crease and the third umpire overlooked it to revoke the on-field umpire’s call, stating that the batter shuffled and deemed the delivery legal. Patidar refused to leave the ground and urged the on-field umpires to have another look at the decision.
The TV umpire soon had another look at the replay of his call and overturned his own decision. “Extremely sorry, the ball had pitched outside the popping crease. I did not see that” third umpire was heard saying on the official broadcast.
