Can Ruben Amorim be the first since Alex Ferguson to win his debut Manchester derby?

New Delhi: Ruben Amorim will be managing his first ever Manchester Derby tonight. It is big night for both the Manchester sides as the two teams have lacked the confidence in their recent few fixtures. There is no better way for Manchester City to get back on winning terms after a few horror shows, both in Europe as well as in the English Premier League. They will be welcoming their neighbours at Etihad, as the visitors will be looking to get the job done.

However, if talk about United managers in the past, and their first Manchester derbies, the last time a manager succeeded in beating the Noisy Neighbours was Sir Alex Ferguson back in 1992/93 season, where United won the match 2-1, thanks to goals from Paul Ince and Mark Hughes.

Ever since, no manager has managed to get the job done as David Moyes became the legendary United manager’s successor, and his first derby saw his side getting battered, 4-1 in Etihad. Sergio Aguero’s brace and goals from Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri were enough for Manuel Pellegrini’s side to humiliate their neighbours.

After Moise got sacked, Manchester United went through five managerial changes and none of them managed to win their first derby with the most recent manager being Eric Ten Hag, who suffered the wrath of Pep Guardiola’s magnificent Sky Blues in the 2022/23 season when City won the match 6-3. It was utter humiliation for the Red Devils, as the deadly duo of Erling Haaland and Phil Foden saw both of them scoring their respective hat-tricks to sink Man United.

It is finally time for Ruben Amorim to take charge of his first Manchester derby, as the United manager and he will be looking to take full advantage of City’s poor form. United are themselves struggling to make it into the top half of the table, as they sit 13th in the table. Amorim needs to get his players together and make sure that they target the weak areas of City that have been exposed over the past few months. United need to take their chances and make the most out of every opportunity that they get.

A reminder that the last time Ruben Amorim met Pep Guardiola’s side, was back in the start of November, where he was managing his final game for the Portuguese champions, Sporting CP in their Champions League clash. It was a night when Amorim showcased his top tactics, as his side completely battered the former Champions League winners, 4-1. United fans can keep their fingers crossed as they will be hoping for something similar from Ruben Amorim and their side. Can Ruben Amorim achieve something that only Sir Alex Ferguson could do, or will this be the game that finally brings Manchester City and Pep Guardiola back on winning terms?
