Huge blow for Australia as star pacer likely to miss remainder of BGT due to injury

New Delhi: In what could be a massive blow for the Australian cricket team, star pacer Josh Hazlewood is likely to miss the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India due to a calf injury. Hazlewood sustained the injury during Day 4 of the ongoing third Test at the Gabba, Brisbane and walked off the field in the first session in serious discomfort.

According to Cricket Australia, The niggle in the right calf has ruled Hazlewood out of the ongoing Brisbane Test, weakening Australia’s bowling attack.

“Josh Hazlewood has sustained a right side calf strain which will prevent him from playing any further part in the Test match against India in Brisbane,” Cricket Australia said in an official statement.

The statement further said that the fast bowler is likely to miss the rest of the series.

Hazlewood could only bowl one over on Tuesday before walking out of the field following a long chat with skipper Pat Cummins, ace batter Steven Smith and team physio Nick Jones.

Big blow for the hosts

The New South Wales bowler underwent scans to check the severity of the injury.

Hazlewood made a comeback to the playing X1 in Brisbane after missing the Pink Ball Test at Adelaide due to a side strain. He made an instant impact with the ball in hand, dismissing premier India batter Virat Kohli on Monday (Day 3) with a superb delivery outside the off-stump.

The 33-year-old fast bowler replaced fellow quick Scot Boland, who featured in the day-night Test at the Adelaide Oval, which Australia won by 10 wickets to level the series 1-1.

Team India, looking to bounce back in the series in the ongoing Gabba Test, is in dire straits against Australia’s first-innings score of 445.
