New Delhi: Chelsea winger Mykhalio Mudryk has been provisionally suspended from football following a positive drug test. The Ukrainian international, who has been sidelined for the past five matches, was notified of the result by the Football Association (FA). The failed test reportedly involved a substance that is unavailable within the UK, sparking widespread speculation about the nature of the incident while awaiting the results of his B sample.
Both Chelsea and Mudryk have issued statements addressing the situation. The club expressed their commitment to supporting the player while cooperating fully with the FA’s investigation. Mudryk himself is said to be maintaining his innocence, indicating that he will work with authorities to clarify the circumstances. The suspension means the 23-year-old will remain unavailable for selection, adding to Chelsea’s mounting challenges this season.

His last appearance for Chelsea came in their Europa Conference League fixture against Heidenheim on November 28. His absence since then has raised questions among fans, with rumors intensifying in recent days about a potential doping violation. The FA’s provisional suspension underscores the seriousness of the issue, and while the player’s future remains uncertain, both the club and Mudryk will await further developments as the investigation unfolds.
Mykhalio Mudryk faces a potential four-year ban for doping
The A sample that has been tested till now was submitted by the 23-year-old back in late October and now faces a nervous wait for the results of the B sample that will be opened in the coming days. The results of the B sample will determine the outcome of things. The Ukrainian winger had even submitted a sample in August as well which was cleared and no change in behaviour has been noted in the player since.
It is believed that Chelsea have started an investigation of their own into the matter. The substance found in the test is reported to not be available within UK, indicating that the contamination may have taken place outside of the country. While it is a nervous wait for the player, he maintains his innocence in the matter and will have a chance to explain himself before he is faced with any charges.

Ukrainian outlet Tribuna claims that the drug found in Mudryk’s sample is meldonium, which is a banned metabolic substance similar to insulin. Accodring to a report by The Sun, if found guilty, the winger could be banned from football for four years, similar to French International Paul Pogba, who was also banned after failing a doping test but that was for a different substance.
This isn’t the first time a Chelsea player finds himself in the middle of a drug-related ban. Two decades ago, Romanian striker Adrian Mutu, who was one of the first signings of former owner Roman Abramovich, was handed a seven month ban after testing positive for cocaine back in September 2004. This led to Mutu’s contract being terminated by the club and the ‘Court of Arbitration for Sport’ eventually awarded a compensation of £14 million to the London club.
Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has provisionally been suspended after failing to clear a doping test. The reports were doing the rounds since morning but now both the club and the player have confirmed the news.
