New Delhi: The Indian men’s hockey team outwitted Great Britain 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out to qualify for the semifinals of the men’s hockey event at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Sunday, notably after being reduced to 10 men in the second quarter. The actual score stood at 1-1 which forced the match into a tiebreak and it was the Indian hockey team that turned out to be the ultimate winner in the quarterfinal clash.
Playing at the Yves du Manoir Stadium in Colombes, India was without their 11th player for more than 40 minutes. Amit Rohidas was shown a red card for raising his stick against a Great Britain player which threatened to change the momentum of the match but India kept the nerves and scripted a brilliant turnaround. The win makes it their second consecutive semifinal appearance at the Games. The Craig Fulton-coached side has moved one step closer to Olympic glory after bagging the thriller.
Veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who is featuring in his last international tournament, was the star of the match, standing like a rock in front of the Indian goalpost. He blocked the penalty strokes by the British men, making saves after saves. It was a gritty and determined performance by the Indian team helmed by Harmanpreet Singh, who got his side the lead in the 22nd minute from a penalty corner. Great Britain levelled the game through Lee Morton from a field effort in the 27th minute.
The moment when Rohidas was sent off the field, India lost their key defender and rusher which gave Great Britain the opportunity to attack in numbers as they constantly tried to take advantage of the lead but faltered in the penalty shoot-off. Nonetheless, India will take on Argentina or Germany in the semi-final on August 6.
