ISL: Hyderabad FC remove head coach Thangboi Singto

New Delhi: Inability to pull Hyderabad FC from the bottom half of the Indian Super League standings cost Thangboi Singto his job as the club announced termination of the head coach’s contract on Wednesday.

Eight losses and only two wins in their first 100 games have left Hyderabad rooted at the 12th spot in the 13-team standings with seven points.

After finishing at the foot of the points table last season under Singhto amidst financial woes, Hyderabad underwent a change in ownership before start of the 2024-25 edition of Indian football’s top-flight competition.

The club kept faith in Singto, who was seen as a nurturer of young talent. But midway through this season, results have been hard to come by, despite inclusion overseas players.

Ahead of the January transfer window, the club wanted a change of guard in search of improvement, “mutually” parting ways with Singto with immediate effect.

“Mr Singto had been associated with the club for close to half a decade. He was appointed as the Head Coach in July 2023 after having served as the Assistant Coach and Technical Director (Youth) since 2020.

“Assistant Coach Shameel Chembakath will assume the role of interim coach till the club makes further announcements,” the club said in a statement.

Long association comes to an end

Singto has been synonymous with Hyderabad FC for nearly five years but persistent poor form meant that new owners Jindal Group wanted someone new in charge.

Hyderabad host NorthEast United on December 23 after which they play another home game against East Bengal on December 28.

The club has battled money woes throughout last season for which they had to pull-out of Durand Cup this season too. Jindal Group took over the reins from Varun Tripuraneni and settled all pending dues to lift the multiple transfer bans imposed on the club.

The takeover has given a sense of stability though results haven’t been forthcoming, forcing the club to make SIngto the third managerial departure after Carles Cuadrat (East Bengal) and Mikael Stahre (Kerala Blasters) in the ongoing season.

Eight losses and only two wins in their first 100 games have left Hyderabad FC rooted at the 12th spot in the 13-team ISL standings with seven points.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
