New Delhi: India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket on 18 December, Wednesday. His decision came after the third Test match between India and Australia ended in a draw at The Gabba in Brisbane. His decision to retire from all forms of cricket saw massive reactions from the cricketing fraternity, but many experts and fans have criticised the timing of the decision.

Ashwin played 106 Test matches and took 537 wickets in the longest format. He finishes seventh on the all-time list of highest wicket-takers in Test Cricket history. Many top cricketers have announced their retirement from cricket in 2024. David Warner

Australian opener David Warner was the first big retirement of 2024. The opener played his final Test match against Pakistan in Sydney. Warner is one of the greatest all-format batters of the cricket and he announced his retirement on January 6, 2024.

James Anderson

The England pacer played his final Test match at the Lord’s against West Indies. Anderson’s family members were present at the stadium and rang the bell before the match as the fast bowler entered the ground for the last time in England jersey. Anderson announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket on July 12, 2024. He took 704 wickets in 188 Test matches

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja (T20I)

India cricketers Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja retired from the T20I format after lifting the 2024 T20 World Cup trophy in Barbados on June 29. The trio made a massive contribution to Indian cricket in the shortest format. They announced their retirement to focus on the Test and ODI format.

Tim Southee (Test)

New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee announced his retirement from Test cricket after the England series. He played a crucial role in New Zealand’s victory in the third Test of the home series against England at Seddon Park in Hamilton. The pacer was given a guard of honour by his teammates. He took 391 wickets in 107 Test matches.

Shikhar Dhawan

Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket on August 24. He last played for Team India in the ODI series against Bangladesh in December 2022 before losing his place to Shubman Gill.
