Paul Pogba’s brother Mathias sentenced to jail for extortion and kidnap attempt

New Delhi: Mathias Pogba, the older brother of Paul Pogba, has been sentenced to three years in prison for attempting to extort €13 million from his younger sibling. However, his sentence was partially suspended, meaning he will serve one year under house arrest with electronic monitoring instead of jail time. This ruling came after a Paris court convicted him of extortion and kidnapping in connection with the plot that surfaced in 2022.

The court heard how Paul Pogba had been held at gunpoint by masked men, including his brother, who demanded a significant sum for “protection” services dating back several years. Despite initially paying €100,000, the group’s threats continued, leading Paul to report the incident to the authorities.

Mathias, along with five accomplices, faced charges for their involvement, with sentences ranging from four to eight years for the others.

Roushdane K., who was identified as the mastermind, received the harshest sentence of eight years in prison. Other members of the extortion group also received significant jail terms, highlighting the severity of the crime. The trial revealed that Mathias Pogba was among the key figures in orchestrating the demands, with Paul Pogba describing the ordeal as a betrayal of family.

Mathias’ lawyer has described the sentence as excessively harsh and suggested they would appeal the decision, claiming Mathias was manipulated into taking part in the crime.

The case brought significant media attention, especially after Mathias had previously threatened to release explosive information about his brother and other football figures.

This legal drama adds to the personal challenges facing Paul Pogba. In addition to dealing with the extortion plot, he is currently navigating the fallout from a doping suspension.

Pogba tested positive for testosterone in 2023, leading to a suspension that has kept him from playing professionally. With his ban reduced, he will be eligible to return to football in 2025.

Despite these setbacks, Paul Pogba has continued to express his desire to return to the game, and the hope remains that the 2018 World Cup winner can rebuild his career after this turbulent period.
