New Delhi: Afghanistan fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi on Friday was fined 15 per cent of his match fee for violating the ICC Code of Conduct during his team’s dynamic 232-run win over Zimbabwe in the second One-Day International match played on Thursday (December 19) in Harare.
The left-arm quick was sanctioned for showing dissent in the match during the second innings, when the hosts were chasing a competitive target of 287 in the second innings.
During the second ball of the fifth over in the Zimbabwe innings, Farooqi bowled a good length delivery to captain Craig Ervine, who attempted to block the ball but missed to connect the ball, and as a result, was hit on the pads. There was a huge appeal from the bowler for a leg-before-wicket decision, but the on-field umpire ruled it as ‘not out’.
Although there wasn’t any review decision-review-system (DRS) option available in the match, Farooqi signalled to opt for one in a move to challenge the umpire’s call. Consequently, all four match officials, including on-field umpires Chris Brown and Percival Sizara, levelled the charge against the 24-year-old for breaching the Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which states ‘howing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.’
What consequence could Fazalhaq Farooqi face with recent demerit point?
In a release by the International Cricket Council, the Afghanistan pacer was also sanctioned with one demerit point, which will be marked next to his disciplinary track record. There wasn’t any requirement of a formal hearing as the player admitted to the offence.
A player might face a potential ban if he accounts for four or more demerit points in a period of 24 months (two years). However, this was the first breach for Farooqi in the last two years, which means he only has one demerit point at the moment.
The bowler picked a couple of wickets in his team’s dominant win with the dismissals Zimbabwe keeper Tadiwanashe Marumani and later on got the better of Ervine to finish with figures of 2 for 15.
Afghanistan fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi received a 15% match fee fine and one demerit point for showing dissent towards an umpire’s decision during Afghanistan’s win over Zimbabwe in the second ODI match in Harare.
