New Delhi: The second leg of the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals unfolded in what turned out to be a dramatic Thursday night, delivering high stakes drama and shocking results as the four semifinalists confirmed their places. Bodø/Glimt stunned Lazio in a penalty thriller while Manchester United edged out Lyon. Athletic Club and Tottenham Hotspur turned out to be the other two semifinalists with one-sided victories.
Athletic Club Bilbao took on the Rangers and registered a confident 2–0 home victory to seal a semifinal spot, following a goalless draw in the first leg quarterfinal in Glasgow. Oihan Sancet put the Basque side ahead from the penalty spot in the first half, and Nico Williams followed it up with a well-placed header in the second half that turned out as the winner. Athletic’s tactical brilliance proved too hot for the Scottish side, and they have set up a semifinal against Manchester United.
At the Deutsche Bank Park, Eintracht Frankfurt hosted Tottenham Hotspur but left the home crowd disappointed with a 0-1 second-leg loss after a draw in the first. The Spurs moved to the semifinals with a 2-1 aggregate win, the result of composed performances from their players. A first-half penalty from Dominic Solanke gave a lead to the Spurs which was enough to seal the tie. Tottenham withstood the late pressure of the home side to fix a semifinal meeting with Bodø/Glimt.
