Maaya Rajeshwaran: Meet 15-year-old selected to train at Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain

New Delhi: Indian teenager Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi has been called to train at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain giving her ambitions a new path to follow. The promising player from Tamil Nadu has signed a one-year contract and will begin her tenure from January 2025 onwards.

According to a report by The Times of India, Maaya’s personal coach and mentor Manoj Kumar said that it was the Balearic Islands-based academy which gave them the offer for the training after they conducted a screening session in a period spanning between a week and 10 days.

Maaya will have one dedicated coach for her training and performance and one coach who will be travelling with her for the tournaments. The 15-year-old has been on a rise in the junior circuit, having claimed the No.1 Girls’ U-18 spot in earlier this year.

Maaya Rajeshwaran’s early days with tennis

Maaya started playing tennis when she was eight years old at the KG Ramesh Tennis Academy in Coimbatore, as per a report by The New Indian Express. After she won the U-12 nationals singles and doubles in Mumbai in 2021, her mother was confident of her talent and the parents mutually agreed to set her for the big dreams of playing professional tennis.

Maaya started playing tennis in foreign countries to upgrade her game and finished fifth at the U14 Australian Open. She has lacked sponsorships to pursue her career, but is determined to become the World No.1 player in the tennis. She also aspires to become the first women’s singles Grand Slam champion from India, a task yet to be achieved.

Maaya Rajeshwaran’s achievements

Maaya has won five ITF juniors singles titles and three ITF juniors doubles titles in the ITF Juniors cycle 2023-2024. She also made a record for the longest ITF juniors winning streak.

Her coach Manoj termed her game as an aggressive player who can stand tall on both the flanks, as told to The New Indian Express. She has been enrolled in the open school education in a move that helps her to travel and across the world to participate in junior tennis competitions.
