Manmohan Singh: Life, achievements and awards

New Delhi: Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India, passed away on December 26. He was 92 years old. Singh was an Indian politician, economist, academic, and bureaucrat who served as the 13th prime minister from 2004 to 2014. He was the fourth longest-serving Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Narendra Modi.

Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Pakistan. His family moved to India during the 1947 partition. He earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Oxford and worked for the United Nations from 1966 to 1969. He later started his career in the Indian government when Lalit Narayan Mishra appointed him an advisor in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The former Prime Minister held important positions in the Government of India in the 1970s and 1980s. He served as chief economic advisor of the Finance Ministry from 1972 to 1976, governor of the Reserve Bank from 1982 to 1985, and head of the Planning Commission from 1985 to 1987.

He was first elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament, in 1991 by the Assam state legislature. He was re-elected in 1995, 2001, 2007, 2013 and 2019. In the 2004 General Elections, the Indian National Congress party teamed up with allies to create the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and defeated the BJP. Congress leader Sonia Gandhi suggested Singh for Prime Minister, and on May 22, 2004, he became the 13th Prime Minister of India. In 2009, the UPA won again in the 15th Lok Sabha elections, and Singh was re-elected as Prime Minister on May 22, 2009.
