New Delhi: Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur welcomed Wolverhampton Wanderers in their final game of this calendar year as they look to bounce back from two back-to-back-defeats. Since beating Southampton 5-0 in the middle of December, the Lilywhites had been on the receiving end of humiliating defeats as they were thrashed 6-3 at home by league leaders Liverpool before Nottingham Forest beat them 1-0 on boxing day.
They hosted a Wolves side high on confidence since the arrival of new manager Vitor Pereira and the visitors used that confidence to sneak an early lead against their hosts. Wolves were awarded a free-kick near the penalty box and instead of shooting they implemented a free kick routine that led to Rayan Ait-Nouri laying off the ball towards Hwang Hee Chan, who was just outside the 18-yard box and curled his shot into the bottom corner to give his side the lead.

With that goal, Spurs fell behind in the seventh minute of the game, going behind to their opponents yet again. Hwang Hee Chan’s goal marked the 15th different occasion in 2024 when Spurs had fallen behind in a home Premier League match, more than any other team in the Premier League in any calendar year. This stat just contributes to the inconsistent form the team has shown under Ange Postecoglou this season.

While Hwang Hee Chan’s goal did set an unwanted record for the hosts, they would find solace in the fact that they weren’t behind for long in the game. Shortly after going behind, the Lilywhites were brought back into the game by Argentine midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur. They won a corner just five minutes after going behind and Pedro Porro floated in a cross into the box and the midfielder smashed a bullet header past Jose Sa to make it 1-1.
Bentancur’s header marked the first goal that Wolves conceded since the arrival of Vitor Pereira. In the two games that he had taken charge of before this one, Wolves had won both games comfortably with a scoreline of 3-0 against Leicester City and 2-0 against Manchester United. They could’ve conceded another after Spurs were given a dubious penalty just before half-time but Jose Sa guessed the correct way and produced a brilliant save to deny Spurs captain Hueng Min Son. However, it didn’t hurt them too much as Brennan Johnson, who won the penalty, put his side ahead shortly after that to send his side into the break with a lead.
Playing their final game of 2024, Spurs went behind to Wolves’ free-kick routine as Hwang Hee Chan put his side ahead which led to the North London club setting an unwanted Premier League record. Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
