New Delhi: Rishabh Pant looked determined to curb his instincts and not go for big shots nearly throughout his innings before a lapse in concentration resulted in a poor shot which cost him his wicket during India’s 340-run chase in their second innings of the 4th Test against Australia in Melbourne. Pant was dismissed on 30 after playing a rash shot against Travis Head to hand India a crucial breakthrough.
After a horrible start from India in their 340-run chase, Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal combined to steady the ship for the visitors with a brilliant partnership. The duo batted together for an entire session post lunch to add 88 runs for the 4th wicket, helping India stage a fightback. However, the partnership was broken by Head in the 59th over after Pant decided to play a big shot against the part-time spinner.
Pant went for a pull shot on a shortish delivery from Head and ended up getting caught by Mitchell Marsh on the boundary rope. Soon after his dismissal, ‘stupid, stupid, stupid’ started trending on X as fans recalled the legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s reaction to the wicket-keeper batter’s dismissal during India’s first innings of the 4th Test.
A furious Gavaskar had slammed Pant on air saying ‘stupid, stupid, stupid’ after the left-hander got out playing a reckless shot in India’s first innings.

Rishabh Pant’s dismissal triggers collapse for India
Pant’s dismissal triggered another collapse for India in the second innings as they lost wickets at regular intervals to allow Australia to gain control of the Test match. After Pant’s departure, India lost Ravindra Jadeja (2) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (1) in quick succession as the two all-rounders failed to make any impact in the game. Jaiswal was the next to depart as Cummins got the left-hander caught behind the stumps after a terrific knock of 84 runs to leave India reeling at 140/7 in the run chase.
Australia are currently on top of India in the 4th Test at the MCG and are close to wrapping up a significant victory which will hand them a 2-1 lead heading into the final 5th Test in Sydney.
