VAR decisions to be announced to the fans in Carabao Cup semi-finals

VAR decisions to be announced to the fans in Carabao Cup semi-finals

New Delhi: A new method by the referees will be adopted as after a visit to the VAR pitchside monitor or when decisions are rendered on factual issues like an unintentional handball by a goalie or offside offenses where the attacker touches the ball, referees will make their final verdicts public as part of a trial.

The approach was tested at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, and similar announcements are typical in other sports like American football and rugby union. In a meeting this summer, the Premier League declared that it will use in-game VAR announcements at some point this season. The trial will include both legs of Arsenal vs. Newcastle and Tottenham vs. Liverpool in the cup semi-finals.

The EFL-run competition’s first legs are scheduled for January 7 and 8, 2025, with the return games scheduled for February 5 and 6. The move, according to refereeing authority PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), is part of its “commitment to transparency” and is intended to increase understanding and clarity surrounding important judgments.

Referees have already practiced at stadiums and been getting ready for the in-stadium announcements at training camps. On Tuesday, the match officials will be revealed. This season, the Premier League Match Centre account on X has provided “near-live” explanations of VAR rulings; nonetheless, if there are any such calls to make, this will be the first time that crowds have heard spoken announcements.

The EFL said in a statement: “The new pilot embraces technological advancements for the benefit of match officials and fans.

“This latest pilot has the support of the EFL and follows earlier collaboration with PGMOL in 2018 to trial VAR in EFL competitions ahead of its introduction in the Premier League.”

A crucial step taken towards fair play?

Although it’s the first time in English football history, we do have a template for this trial that encourages having low expectations. The conversations that take place in the VAR booth will not be recorded in real time, like in cricket. It will not be explained what the referee was thinking when he reached his decision or what the VARs were thinking when they asked for a review.

In the event that games played in FIFA events that first experimented with this system are any indication, we will see the referee explain the judgment, which we would naturally learn very fast anyhow. Although the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the global organization that sets rules for the game, have showed little interest in testing real-time audio, PGMOL head of refereeing Howard Webb would want to take things a step further.

For the first time during the Carabao Cup semi-finals, referees will inform football fans inside stadiums in England of any decisions made by video assistant referees.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
