IRCTC website, app down for the third time this month just before tatkal booking

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) app and website was plagued by another outage on the morning of December 31, 2024. Significantly, this incident was the third outage in a single month. The same glitch happened on December 26, 2024 morning.

According to reports, all the outages happened just before the time when tatkal bookings open at 10 am. On Tuesday, December 31, 2024, the outage began at approximately 9:50 am – a mere 10 minutes before the tatkal booking window opened.

Reports said those who attempted to log in to the IRCTC website saw the following message: “Booking and Cancellation for All site will not be available for next hour. Inconvenience caused is deeply regretted. FOR CANCELLATION/FILE TDR, PLEASE CALL AT CUSTOMER CARE NO. 14646,08044647999 & 08035734999 OR MAIL AT etickets@irctc.co.in.”

Just like last time, the outage caused great inconvenience among users who vented their frustration as they were in rush to book train ticket. Reports stated that Downdetector recorded about 47% of those who tried could not access the website and as many as 42% faced issues with the app. Moreover, 10% could not complete ticket bookings.

On December 26, the IRCTC mobile app and website sprung back to life after about 2 hours of malfunctioning.
“Due to maintenance activity, e-ticketing service will not be available. Please try later,” the IRCTC had said in a statement. Data show that about 7.31 lakh tickets are booked every day on average through the IRCTC app. IRCTC has a registered user base of 6.6 crore.
