New Delhi: Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Gujarat Titans have sent some shock waves among the cricket fans with their cryptic New Year post on social media site X. The six-word post hints towards a potential change in captaincy ahead of the 2025 edition of the cash-rich league. Shubman Gill, who is the current captain of the Titans franchise, is set to be replaced by Afghanistan star Rashid Khan as per the post.
The tweet features a photo of the star Afghan all-rounder Rashid, accompanied by the caption: ‘A Clean Slate. A New Story.’ As soon as the post went viral on social media on Wednesday, it raised speculations among the cricket fans that Rashid might be in the line to replace Gill as the skipper of the franchise in the upcoming edition of the T20 league.

No official confirmation from GT
Apart from the cryptic post, there has been no official confirmation from the Titans franchise as of now. As per the post, a major announcement regarding their leadership structure change might be expected in the next few days. The reason why the post has sparked speculations is that Afghan player Rashid has been a standout performer for the side since joining it in 2022. Ahead of IPL 2025 mega-auction, Rashid was retained for a whopping Rs 18 crore price.
On the other hand, GT, who were quite impressive in their initial two years under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, faced a challenging year in 2024 when Gill tookover from Pandya, who joined Mumbai Indians. Though the prolific batter was quite impressive individually, he could not do much as the skipper of the franchise. Titans finished the last season on a disappointing eighth position in the points table. Gill was retained by GT for Rs 16.5 crore.
