Guccio Gucci: The man who founded the famous Gucci company

The full name of Guccio Gucci is Guccio Giovanbattista Giacinto Dario Maria Gucci. Born on March 26, 1881, in Florence, the father of the Italian businessman and fashion designer was a leather craftsman. Gucci worked at London’s Savoy Hotel as a bellboy and it is said that it was there he became fascinated with the luxury suitcases that the aristocrats of the city used to carry. After coming back to Italy, Gucci worked for Franzi, a luggage brand. It was there that he learned to work with leather.

The beginning of Gucci company’s journey

In 1921, Guccio Gucci established the Gucci company in Florence. Back then, it was a small family-owned leather shop which sold leather bags, saddles, and other accessories in the 1920s to horsemen. The company later started selling equestrian accessories and became stronger when the four sons of Gucci, Aldo, Vasco, Rodolfo, and Ugo (his adopted stepson), joined the family business. In 1935, the League of Nations imposed an embargo on Italy which hampered leather’s import. Gucci was forced to find an alternative and the company’s workshop developed a new material from Naples’ woven hemp.

In 1938, Gucci opened a store in Rome. In 1947, due to the scarcity of materials as a result of World War II, Gucci began to produce Bamboo Bag and used lightweight bamboo for handles, which became immensely popular. Notably, Aldo Gucci designed the first pigskin bag of the company. In 1952, a Gucci store was opened at the Savoy Plaza Hotel in New York City, the company’s first venture outside Italy. Guccio Gucci passed away on January 2, 1953, in Milan at the age of 71, and today, Gucci is one of the largest fashion empires in the world.

Guccio Gucci, born in 1881, founded the luxury brand Gucci in 1921, initially focusing on leather goods. Inspired by luxury luggage during his time at the Savoy Hotel, his craftsmanship and innovative use of materials, like hemp during wartime restrictions, propelled the company’s growth.   knowledge Knowledge News, Photos and Videos on General Knowledge
