New Delhi: The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports on Thursday announced the list of winners of the National Sports Awards 2024. Four athletes including Manu Bhaker and D Gukesh were nominated for the Khel Ratna Award – the highest sports honour in the country while 32 athletes including the likes of Jyothi Yarraji, Annu Rani, Salima Tete, para-athletes Navdeep Singh, Nitesh Kumar among others were recommended for the Arjuna Award.
The winners will receive their respective awards from the President of India at a special felicitation ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday, January 17.
The prestigious Khel Ratna will be conferred to double Olympic medallist Bhaker, youngest world chess champion Gukesh, men’s hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh and Paralympic gold-winner Praveen Kumar.
Bhaker won two bronze medals – 10m air pistol individual and 10m air pistol mixed team events – at the Paris 2024 Olympics and became the first Indian post-independence to claim two medals in a single Olympic edition.
Meanwhile, Gukesh scripted history by becoming the youngest winner in the World Chess Championship.
Hamranpreet Singh will be conferred with the prestigious award for leading the Indian hockey team to its second consecutive Olympic bronze medal.
Para high-jumper Praveen will be awarded for winning the T64 event at the Paris Paralympics.
