New Delhi: Indian actor and entrepreneur Abhishek Bachchan has entered the cricket market with his investment as the co-owner of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL), which is a private franchise tournament in association with three cricket nations – Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands.
The ETPL, which has received the nod from the International Cricket Council (ICC), is scheduled from July 15 to August 3 this year. Talented players from Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands will have a big platform to showcase their talent by rubbing shoulders with some of the experienced T20 campaigners across the globe, and project themselves in their national setup. This is the latest addition to the burgeoning T2o franchise cricket around the globe with the first in the Europe.
Abhishek Bachchan’s first investment in cricket
Abhishek Bachchan is no strange to franchise tournaments as he owns Jaipur Pink Panthers, a team in the Pro Kabaddi League (India’s franchise tournament for the sport). He is also the co-owner of Chennaiyin FC, a football club which regularly features in the Indian Super League (ISL), India’s top-tier league for the sport.
“I’m humbled and excited about this unique collaboration between the cricket boards of Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands. I sincerely thank the ICC and the three boards for their tireless work, and I have immense faith in our team to bring this event to fruition,” Abhishek Bachchan was quoted as saying in a media release.
“Cricket is not just a sport; it’s a unifying force that transcends boundaries. The ETPL is the ideal platform to showcase cricket’s growing global appeal. With cricket being included in the 2028 Olympics, its popularity will further surge,” he added.
The formal launch of the ETPL will take place very soon, and in the same event, all the franchise teams and their owners will be revealed. The player draft format will also be announced during the launch.
