New Delhi: South Africa defeated Pakistan by 10 wickets in the second Test match at the Newlands in Cape Town on Monday, January 6. The Proteas men also clinched the Test series by 2-0. Ryan Rickelton, Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne notched up brilliant centuries while Rabada also picked up six wickets in the match.
South Africa opted to bat first on the batting pitch and scored 615 runs in the first innings. Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton stitched a 61-run partnership for the opening wicket but the Pakistani bowler picked up crucial wickets in quick succession to put pressure on the hosts.
Rickelton and Bavuma batted brilliantly and forged a 235-run partnership for the fourth wicket. The South African captain scored 106 runs off 179 deliveries with the help of nine boundaries and two maximums. After his dismissal, Rickelton stitched another crucial partnership with Kyle Verreynne (100) and Marco Jansen (62). The Proteas opener amassed 259 runs off 343 deliveries, his remarkable innings was laced with 29 boundaries and three maximums.
In reply, Pakistan got bowled out for 194. Jansen and Rabada bowled tight lines and lengths as the visitors lost three important wickets in the ninth over of the innings. Rizwan and Babar forged a 98-run partnership for the fourth wicket but once that stand was broken, the visitors crumbled and were forced to follow on by the Proteas men. Kagiso Rabada picked up three wickets while Kwena Maphaka and Keshav Maharaj also took two wickets each.
The deficit was 421 and captain Masood led from the front as he stitched a 205-run partnership for the opening wicket. Masood notched up his maiden Test century as Pakistan captain while Babar also scored 81 runs. The visitors showed courage in the second innings and made South Africa work hard.
Pakistan lost the wickets of Masood and Shakeel in quick succession against the second new ball but Rizwan and Salman Agha stitched a 88-run partnership. Maharaj dismissed both the set batters and ensured that Shan Masood and Co. couldn’t get a competitive lead. Bedingham and Markram chased down a 58-run target in eight overs to win the second Test and clinch the series by 2-0.
