January 2025 Transfer Window: One player per Premier League club who needs a fresh start

January 2025 Transfer Window: One player per Premier League club who needs a fresh start

New Delhi: The January transfer window is a pivotal time for clubs to fine-tune their squads, whether by addressing weak spots, reinforcing key areas, or offloading surplus players. For some players, it’s a chance to revive their careers, gain much-needed game time, or seek new challenges in a different environment. Whether it’s a temporary loan or a permanent deal, the mid-season window provides opportunities for fresh starts.

We’ve taken a closer look across the Premier League to identify players who could benefit from a move this January. From established stars struggling for form or favor under a new manager to young talents in need of consistent minutes, the reasons vary. Some players may look to regain fitness after injury, while others might aim to prove their worth ahead of the summer transfer window. Let’s dive in to find out one player from every Premier League clubs that needs to make a move in this window.

1) Arsenal- Takehiro Tomiyasu

🚨According to @jpnfoottoto, Takehiro Tomiyasu could leave Arsenal this January due to limited playing time after a series of injuries…

🔸Tomi is expected to continue to receive huge interest from Serie A clubs, despite facing numerous injury problems and having only played 6… pic.twitter.com/ZlkiLArsQ6

— 𝙈𝙚𝙭 (@Afcmex) January 4, 2025

Arsenal don’t have a very huge squad that they’d have players missing out on gametime but their defense certainly has a lot of options that they can let go of people without affecting the squad too much. While Kieran Tierney is set to leave after his contract expires at the end of the season, Arsenal should also cut their losses of Japanese right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu. The 26-year-old has been extremely injury prone during his time at the club and has only played six minutes of action this season. The Gunners already have Ben White, Jurrien Timber, and Thomas Partey who can play in the position making Tomiyasu easy to let go.

2) Aston Villa- Jaden Philogene

— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) January 4, 2025

Aston Villa only resigned Jaden Philogene in the summer from Hull City but the young winger has struggled for gametime in the first half of the season. Villa moved for Philogene as they wanted to add more members to their squad for their maiden UEFA Champions League campaign, but the English winger has so far failed to either score or assist in the season. Having only played little over 500 minutes till now, he hasn’t made a single appearance since the middle of December. Manager Unai Emery has confirmed he can leave on loan this season with Premier League side Ipswich Town showing interest in the youngster.

3) Bournemouth- Max Aarons

🚨 Max Aarons is very close to joining Lille on loan from Bournemouth. 🍒

— Goals Hub (@GoalsHub_) January 5, 2025

When Max Aarons broke out at Norwich City, he seemed like the next big English right back who will dominate Premier League football. When he signed for Bournemouth, he seemed like a shrewd signing for the Cherries but now he just seems lost in the shuffle at the Vitality Stadium. Capable of playing on either flanks, he’s still made only three appearances for the side and with the Cherries aiming for European football, it doesn’t seem like Aarons will add a lot more to that number. With French club Lille interested in signing him, he should head out the exit door this January, either on loan or permanently.

4) Brentford- Keane Lewis Potter

— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) January 4, 2025

Unlike most of the others on this list, Keane Lewis Potter has regularly been in Brentford’s plan this season and has made a lot of appearances for the Bees. He’s made 24 appearances for them in all competitions but he finds himself on this list because of his form for the Bees. He joined the club in 2022 and in his two and a half years till now, he hasn’t delivered on the promise he showed at Hull City. In 60 league games for Brentford, he’s only scored four times for them and with Yoane Wissa, Bryan Mbuemo, and Kevin Schade all performing for the Bees, a move away from them would be more suited for the former Hull City product.

5) Brighton- Evan Ferguson

Would Evan Ferguson on loan be a great deal for The Arsenal? 🇮🇪 pic.twitter.com/SvmwKsCtQd

— AFTV (@AFTVMedia) January 6, 2025

Just two years ago, Brighton’s Evan Ferguson had the world at his feet having broken through at the Amex Stadium. In his first season in first team football he scored six for Brighton in just 950 Premier League minutes. He followed that up with another six goal season last campaign, this time in little under 1400 minutes. This was expected to be the season where he broke the shackles and made the starting spot his own but a loss of form and injuries restricted him to only one goal in 220 minutes. With the potential still hidden there, a loan move away from the club could help him recapture his form.

6) Chelsea- Ben Chilwell

🚨 Atletico Madrid are showing strong interest in Ben Chilwell and are keen on a potential deal for the Chelsea full-back in January.

(Source: @Ekremkonur) pic.twitter.com/SbVn3zY46h

— Transfer News Live (@DeadlineDayLive) October 3, 2024

Chelsea’s forgotten man Ben Chilwell needs to leave the London club after being frozen out of the team by head coach Enzo Maresca. Chilwell has played only 45 minutes of professional football all season despite being a quality left-back. He doesn’t fit into the style of play that Maresca plays and needs to quit the club to restart his career. He is the club’s second highest paid player though, which proves to be a stumbling block in his departure but La Liga side Atletico Madrid have shown interest in the player in the past and Chelsea should cash in whatever offer they get for the 28-year-old.

7) Crystal Palace- Rob Holding

🚨 Rob Holding has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Frank Lampard at Coventry City after being exiled from the Crystal Palace squad.

— Transfer News Live (@DeadlineDayLive) January 6, 2025

From the forgotten man of one London club to the other, you might’ve forgotten that former Arsenal defender Rob Holding is still on the books for Crystal Palace. The 29-year-old hasn’t played a single minute of first team football for the Eagles since signing for them last and has instead turned out four times for the U-21 side. Palace manager Oliver Glasner even confirmed that he has been training with the U23 side, which shows how badly he needs to move. Coventry City manager Frank Lampard is looking to bring him on loan at the club and Holding should jump at the chance to end his Selhurst Park nightmare.

8) Everton- Beto

🚨🔥 #Torino are increasing the pressure on #Beto: decisive contacts expected soon with #Everton, as @iljackmora told.

🗣️ The two clubs are discussing a loan with an obligation to buy: other 🇮🇹 teams in the race, ready to make moves in case of no agreement between 🐂 and #EFC. pic.twitter.com/IJq6no2Vq8

— Rudy Galetti (@RudyGaletti) January 5, 2025

Everton forward Beto is another name who needs to move away from his club to kick start his career once again. He joined the Toffees off the back of two good seasons with Udinese but has struggled for form at Goodison Park. He scored only three league goals in 30 appearances last season. This season, he’s only made 12 appearances playing only 220 minutes in the league. A return to Italy seems to be on the cards for the striker and he should leave at the first chance he gets as at 26, he still has some time to turn his career around.

9) Fulham- Carlos Vinicius

Benfica once rejected a bid of €60M for Carlos Vinícius. The then Benfica president said he’d only be sold for 100M. Today, he joins Fulham for just €5M. pic.twitter.com/B78K39kacV

— Alex Gonçalves (@Aljeeves) September 1, 2022

Once a promising striker at Benfica, Carlos Vinicius has struggled during his time in England. He joined Spurs on a season long loan from Benfica initially but didn’t impress in his nine Premier League games for them. He joined Fulham in a cut price deal in the 2022/23 season but scored only five league goals for the Cottagers. This season he’s only played three minutes of football for Fulham as he doesn’t feature in Marco Silva’s plans and needs to leave the club if he wants to salvage his playing career.

10) Ipswich Town- George Hirst

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 George Hirst since leaving Leicester City for £1.5M

— 𝙇𝘾𝙁𝘾 𝙎𝙋 (@LCFCshitposting) October 26, 2024

George Hirst was a vital player for the Tractor Boys in their push to the Premier League last season as he contributed to 13 goals in 26 games. However, he hasn’t been able to repeat that form in the top flight with only two goal contributions in eight appearances. He has played less than 200 minutes of league football having fallen behind the pecking order since the arrival of Liam Delap and Sammie Szmodics in the summer. While injury has forced him to miss 15 games this season, a loan move back to the Championship might help him regain his confidence before returning to Portman Road.

11) Leicester City- Patson Daka

❗️NEW❗️Patson #Daka has been offered to AS #Monaco but the club haven’t made a move yet. #Leicester open to let him go.

— LCFC Daily News (@cuzcuzverde) January 2, 2025

Patson Daka was supposed to be Leicester’s eventual replacement for club hero Jamie Vardy but four years on since his arrival at the club, Jamie Vardy is still leading the line for the Foxes. Signed from RB Salzburg, Daka showed a lot of potential in Austria but his career never really took in England. He couldn’t achieve the heights he reached with Salzburg in the Premier League with his best season for Leicester coming in the Championship where he contributed to 12 goals in 20 games. Having played just over 200 minutes for Leicester this season, a return to the Championship would be the best outcome for all parties involved.

12) Liverpool- Federico Chiesa

🚨 Federico Chiesa has asked to leave Liverpool just 6 months after joining.

(Source: @TBRFootball) pic.twitter.com/LDYRdw8Jws

— Transfer News Live (@DeadlineDayLive) January 4, 2025

Federico Chiesa was the only addition that Liverpool made to their squad for this season in the summer and he is already proving to be one of the worst buys in Liverpool’s history. The former Juventus winger has only made one Premier League appearance this season, an 18-minute cameo against Bournemouth. A combination of injuries and the excellent form of Liverpool’s current attack has kept him out of Arne Slot’s side. With a host of Italian clubs looking to lure him back to his home nation, Chiesa could be tempted to cut his Merseyside nightmare short.

13) Manchester City- James McAtee

🚨 Sebastian Kehl is currently working flat out to finalise the James McAtee deal. If everything goes according to plan, the player will move to Dortmund in January. The favoured plan is a loan + buy option now. Plan B would be a permanent transfer in the summer.

🗞 @BILD #BVB pic.twitter.com/OfOcBbFMNW

— BVB Newsblog (@bvbnewsblog) January 5, 2025

The latest product from Manchester City’s famed academy, James McAtee is another young City star with high potential. Often overshadowed by fellow academy graduate Oscar Bobb, this season was expected to be McAtee’s breakthrough season in the absence of Bobb. However, he’s only made four appearances for the Cityzens in the league, playing a combined 36 minutes in those appearances. With Pep’s reluctance to use him more frequently in the Premier League, a loan away from the club could help in the development of the youngster.

14) Manchester United- Marcus Rashford

AC Milan are discussing internally whether to make a loan move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford 👀 pic.twitter.com/sKmROGMcPI

— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) January 6, 2025

One of the best academy products to come out of the famed Manchester United academy in recent times, Marcus Rashford seems to be heading out the exit door sooner rather than later. The 26-year-old has been a fan favourite ever since he made the switch to the first team but seems to have fallen out of favour under new boss Ruben Amorim. Rashford hasn’t made a single appearance for United in their last six games under Amorim and hasn’t even made the squad for five of those games. With clubs in Italy interested, Rashford might leave Old Trafford this January in order to not stagnate his career.

15) Newcastle United- Miguel Almiron

🚨🎙️ Charlotte FC assistant manager Christian Fuchs speaks PUBLICLY on Miguel Almiron 🇵🇾

“He (Almiron) is a great player but I don’t want to talk about him as he hasn’t signed yet.”

“All I know is that once it is signed, Almiron will be a great addition to our club.” pic.twitter.com/fvdKRkM00S

— Geordie Josh (@geordiejosh) January 2, 2025

Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron has been a faithful servant at the club during these last six years but it seems like his time at the Magpies is now finally coming to an end. He has fallen behind the likes of Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, and Jacob Murphy. He has been linked with a move away from the club for the past two windows but a move didn’t materialize but with Charlotte FC coming back for the Paraguayan this January, it may finally be the time for him to end his Toons career. With only 300 minutes of football this season, a move back to the MLS would be the best option for all parties combined.

16) Nottingham Forest- Emmanuel Dennis

🚪 Emmanuel Dennis has concrete chance to leave Nottingham Forest this summer. #NFFC open to letting the player leave.

Waiting for offers to arrive for 🇳🇬. pic.twitter.com/EqF3GW77MU

— Transfer Daily (@Transfer1_Daily) July 30, 2024

You might be forgiven for not remembering that Emmanuel Dennis is still a Nottingham Forest player. Nuno Santo’s side are having a dream season till now as they sit in the top four of the Premier League but Dennis has played zero part in this fairytale run. Since returning from his loan spell at former club Watford in the summer, Dennis has not played any professional football for Forest. He showed good form while at Watford before his move to Forest and he desperately needs to move away from the Tricky Trees if he wants to continue his career at the top level.

17) Southampton- Armel Bella-Kotchap

— FutsHaber (@FutsHaberr) January 4, 2025

Similarly to Dennis, Southampton center back Armel Bella-Kotchap has played zero part in Southampton’s Premier League season this campaign. The German defender has not played a single minute in the Premier League with his only appearance for the Saints being a 26 minute cameo in the EFL Cup. He joined as a highly rated player from Germany when signing for Southampton but has since failed to build on that reputation. A move back his home nation could do the trick for the defender, who is still only 23 years of age.

18) Tottenham Hotspurs- Brandon Austin

Spurs goalkeeper Brandon Austin stepped up for his first-team debut against Newcastle due to injuries to Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster.

After nine years at the club and no competitive game time since 2021, he won Player of the Match 👏 pic.twitter.com/Dc7O52UnkR

— ESPN UK (@ESPNUK) January 4, 2025

Spurs keeper Brandon Austin only recently made his debut for the club in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle this past weekend, a whole nine years after signing for the club. He was even awarded the Man of the Match award for his performances despite ending the match on the losing side but it doesn’t seem he has much of a future at the club. Spurs have recently signed former Slavia Praha keeper Antonin Kinsky and already have Fraser Forster and Guglielmo Vicario once they return, making Austin the fourth choice keeper at the club. He should use the recent limelight shown on him to move away from the club.

19) West Ham United- Danny Ings

🚨 Michail Antonio and Danny Ings could both leave West Ham before the expiry of their respective deals next summer.

(Source: Football Insider) pic.twitter.com/nrb7tNeftJ

— Everything About Football⚽ (@JoshCla17226805) September 16, 2024

West Ham forward Danny Ings has struggled to replicate his form of old at the London stadium since his move from Villa Park in 2023. The English striker is in the final six months of his contract and it doesn’t look like he is going to be offered a new deal by the Hammers, which leaves him free to discuss a move for the summer. He can either sign a pre-contract agreement now for the summer or leave right away in a cut-price deal from the Hammers. Former club Southampton are struggling for goals this season and a return to the club where he had his best time shouldn’t be ruled out entirely.

20) Wolves- Pedro Lima

🚨🟠 OFFICIAL: Wolves have hijacked deal and signed Pedro Lima from Sport Recife despite deal verbally agreed with BlueCo group last week.

Club statement from Sport Recife confirms deal in place. pic.twitter.com/PehqRFFgXK

— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) June 17, 2024

Wolves only signed the 19-year-old highly rated right back in the summer but he hasn’t made an appearance in the Premier League so far for the club. Lima has only made two appearances for the side with both coming in the EFL Cup in which he has managed to get an assist. With both club captain Nelson Semedo and Matt Doherty playing in the same position as Lima, chances might be hard to come by for the defender this season. A loan move to either the championship or somewhere outside of England might help his development more making it a win-win situation for all parties involved.
