New Delhi: British prosecutors on Wednesday said that UK Athletics and its former head of sport were charged with manslaughter over the death of Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei in 2017 when he was training in London.

Hayayei passed away while training at Newham Leisure Centre when a metal cage fell on him in July 2017. Doctors pronounced the 36-year-old dead the scene.

He had made his debut in javelin and shot out events at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Originally from the United Arab Emirates, Hayayei was training for the 2017 World Paralympic Athletics Championships when he met his death.

Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said UK Athletics Limited was charged with “corporate manslaughter and a health and safety at work act offence”.

The 77-year-old Davies was booked for “gross negligence manslaughter and a health and safety at work act offence” under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

They are expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on January 31. UK Athletics and Davies are yet to comment on the matter.

Unitimely death

Hayayei has set his eyes on competing in the F34 shot put, discus and javelin events. He was a father of five and was placed sixth in the javelin and seventh in the shot put on his his Paralympic debut at Rio 2016.

He had finished fifth in the discus and eighth in the shot put on his debut at the World Championships in 2915 at Doha, Qatar. He was training to appear in his second appearance at the World Championships in 2017 in London.

During the opening ceremony of the World Para-athletics Championships at London Stadium, a moment of silence was held in Hayayei’s honour.
