New Delhi: Serbian ace Novak Djokovic has a huge task in front of him ahead of the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open 2025. Djokovic, who has been a master on the blue GreenSet surface at the Australian Open with 10 titles in his kitty, would be eyeing for an 11th one when he kickstarts his campaign in Melbourne this Sunday.
But the 24-time Grand Slam cham has a gigantic task ahead of him if he aims to secure his 25th Grand Slam title as a potential clash against Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the quarterfinals of the big event is what will be his biggest obstacle before crossing the finish line. Djokovic will be up against Indian-born American wildcard entrant Nishesh Basavareddy in the first round on Sunday.
Jannik Sinner to be up against Nicolas Jarry
Meanwhile, world number one player Jannik Sinner has been drawn against Nicolas Jarry to start his Australian Open defence after he triumphed over Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in last year’s final clash in Melbourne to secure the first major of his career. Alcaraz gets under way against Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko, who scored a victory over world number 11 Stefanos Tsitsipas at the recent United Cup tournament. Alexander Zverev will meet French wildcard Lucas Pouille. India’s highest-ranked singles player Sumit Nagal will take on Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic in the opening round of the event.
Meanwhile in the women’s draw, world number one Aryna Sabalenka is set to start her title defence against American Sloane Stephens. The top seed is on course to become the first woman since Martina Hingis to bag three consecutive titles. Coco Gauff, seeded third, will be up against Sofia Kenin in what is considered to be a tough draw for the her. Iga Swiatek has been handed an easier draw against Czech doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova, ranked 46.
