New Delhi: SN Subrahmanyan, chairman of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), is in the news after he suggested that employees must work 90 hours a week and even on Sundays. Subrahmanyan has come under fire for his comment in which he says employees should also work on Sundays as how long can one stare at his wife and the wives stare at their husbands.
The video of L&T chairman’s remarks surfaced on Reddit, and has been drawing criticism on the platform. While interacting with L&T employees, Subrahmanyan said he regretted he was not able to make the employees work on Sundays. “If I can make you work on Sundays, I will be more happy, because I work on Sundays,” he said during the interaction.
‘How long can you stare at your wife?’
He also asked the employees what they gained from taking off and sitting at home. He said, “What do you do sitting at home? How long can you stare at your wife? How long can the wives stare at their husbands? Get to the office and start working.”
Subrahmanyan reportedly gave an example of his chat with a Chinese person who claimed Beijing can beat the United States of America as according to him Chinese people worked 90 hours a week, while Americans work only 50 hours a week.
L&T chairman is facing ire and several people have commented on Redditt. One of them wrote “Another CEO promoting horror shamelessly”.
Another user wrote, why highly paid CEOs expect the same level of commitment from lower-paid employees. “Why don’t companies offer different types of working hours? What if a company had different options? 40 hours a week, 30 hours a week, 50 hours a week, 70 hours a week. More pay for more hours?” wrote a user.
