New Delhi: Former world number one Andy Murray has said that he could not refuse the opportunity to coach his long-time rival Novak Djokovic of Serbia at the upcoming Australian Open. Djokovic split with his old coach Goran Ivanisevic in the last year and in November 2024, the legendary tennis player announced British Murray as his new coach.

Murray spoke about the partnership with his old rival for the first time after being announced as his coach and with the Australian Open just a few days away, a lot of responsibility is there on his shoulders. Murray revealed that this happened after an unexpected conversation took place with the Serbian giant last year during a phone call.

Will discuss with family: Murray to Djokovic

Murray, who retired from professional tennis in August 2024, further revealed that last year he told Djokovic that he will discuss the proposal offered to him with his family and get back to him accordingly. Murray later agreed to help Novak on a trial basis with the first assignment being the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Djokovic, on the other hand, is aiming to clinch a record-extending 11th Australian Open title as well as his 25th Grand Slam Title in Melbourne this month. The record major would put him clear of Australia’s Margaret Court in terms of all-time victories.

The British player further said that when asked about whether he will be able to help Djokovic, he said that he could not say no to this unique opportunity and experience., believing that it would be a good idea to try it. Murray has additionally not ruled out the possibility of coaching the tennis ace on a long-term basis.

Meanwhile, the pair, which was famous for on-court rivalry earlier, was spotted working together in Spain last month before they joined forces in Melbourne last week.
