New Delhi: Phil Foden will most likely miss out on playing in the Nations League games for England due to illness, believes Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. For City, Foden has only managed to play 45 minutes this season. After Citizen’s opening 2-0 win over Chelsea, Foden has missed out on the next two fixtures against Ipswich and West Ham and will most likely sit out during the international break with the English side.
Pep Guardiola says he thinks Phil Foden will NOT join England on international duty due to illness.
Pep: “He doesn’t feel well otherwise he would be here. But international teams decide. He doesn’t feel good in his stomach, a little virus, but the people say he will be fine…”

Guardiola said that he hoped the 24-year-old would return after the international break and mentioned that Foden hadn’t felt well since playing against West Ham and had picked up some kind of stomach virus. He further mentioned that he would like to give Foden time to recover. Giving his opinion on Phil Foden’s participation with the England team, the 53-year-old refrained from providing a definite answer, mentioning that it was on the national side to take that call, though the participation is an outside chance.
Foden has played 41 games for England, scoring four times and started in all the games during the Euro 2024. He was named on the side of England’s interim manager, Lee Carsley, for the second-tier games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland. Foden scored 24 times from appearances for City across all competitions last season and won the Player of the Year for last season as well.
So far, Manchester City have won all three games this season as the reigning champions look for their fifth consecutive Premier League title. However, they have played without their two most important players. Apart from Foden, Rodri hasn’t been able to play for City after picking up a hamstring injury during Spain’s victory in the Euro 2024 final. City have been dominating this season thanks to Erling Haaland’s back-to-back hattricks in the last two games against Ipswich Town and West Ham.
