New Delhi: Former England pacer James Anderson is set to return to professional cricket since retiring from Test cricket in July of last year and is in talks with Lancashire to play in all formats in Division Two of the English County Championship next season.
The 42-year-old retired with 704 Test wickets at an average of 26.45 in 188 matches after being on England duty 21 years, his final game being at Lord’s against the West Indies in July 2024.
He hasn’t played competitive cricket since and though he went unsold in the Indian Premier league auction in December, has insisted on retaining hunger and being fit enough to carry on playing.
After hanging up his boots, he has worked as England’s Test bowling coach, taking his place in the nets in addition to working with the team’s strength and conditioning coaches.
Now he is set to return for Lancashire, for signed him nearly 25 years ago and for whom he made his first-class debut in 2002, reports English daily The Telegraph.
Evergreen hero
In his last appearance in domestic circuit in June 2024, Anderson claimed 7 for 35 against Nottinghamshire at Southport. Lancashire would need all of his guile next season after getting relegated from the top flight of the County Championship.
Anderson would be available from the start of the new season with Lancashire’s campaign beginning on April 4 against Middlesex at Lord’s. He would be up for selection in five games before resuming his England coaching role in a one-off match against Zimbabwe in May.
Since he is no longer a centrally contracted player of the England and Wales Cricket Board, Lancashire would have to bear Anderson’s wages.
The right arm seamer has also made himself available to play white-ball cricket, though his last T20 appearance was in 2014.
