New Delhi: Lamine Yamal has been Barcelona’s shining star since breaking into the team last season. The teenage prodigy has grown from strength to strength from last season and has established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet when available. After breaking into the starting XI last season, he made 50 appearances for the club in the campaign, scoring seven goals and contributing to nine assists.
This form saw him named in the Spain squad for UEFA Euro 2024, where he once again proved to be a pivotal member of Spain’s Euro winning squad. With one goal and four assists, he was named the young player of the tournament and returned to Barcelona as a champion. He was then given a new jersey number and took the number 19 jersey at the club in which he has put in some brilliant performances. In 24 games this season, he’s contributed to 22 goals and formed a lethal partnership with both Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.

Following his excellent form this season, reports from Spanish program El Chiringuito claim that Yamal would be wearing the iconic number 10 jersey at Barcelona from the next season onwards. Ever since breaking into the team, the 17-year-old is seen as the successor to Lionel Messi’s throne at Barcelona and wearing the number the legendary Argentine used to wear at the club would be one way to follow into his footsteps.

If this indeed does happen to be true, it begs the question as to what will happen with fellow youngster Ansu Fati. The 22-year-old was Barca’s most exciting youngster before the emergence of Lamine Yamal and his striking performances for the club led many to believe that Fati would be the one to succeed Messi’s legacy at the club but he has flattered to deceive after his initial break through campaign.
After breaking into the first team during the 2019/20 season, Fati was given Messi’s iconic number 10 jersey following his departure from the club in 2021. Fati’s impressive showings earned him the moniker of being the ‘next Messi’ for the club but recurrent injury issues have hampered his growth. Since being handed the number 10 jersey in September 2021, he has missed 45 games for the club through various injuries.
The youngster was sent out on loan to Brighton last season in the hopes to revive his career but only played little over 500 minutes in the league and missed 14 games in the season as well. Since returning to Barca this season, Fati has only played eight games amounting to less than 200 minutes for the club and hasn’t scored or assisted in that time. He has been left out of the club’s last three matchday squads and speculation over his future is increasing. If Yamal is given Fati’s jersey number next season, it could signal the end of his time with the Blaugrana.
