Copa Del Rey: Real Madrid rely on extra-time to beat Celta Vigo and reach final eight

New Delhi: Real Madrid defeated Celta Vigo in extra time to go to the Copa del Rey quarterfinals. Brazilian international Endrick scored twice in the second half of extra time to give Carlo Ancelotti’s team the victory, as the game ended 2-2 after ninety minutes. Real were rattled in the opening five minutes of the game when Celta’s Carl Starfelt struck the woodwork. However, on the other end of the pitch, splendid save by the Celta goalkeeper, Ivan Villar was forced by Tchouameni.

After a beautiful play with Luka Modric, Brahim Diaz nearly scored the first goal, but Villar was once again proved to be unbeatable in goal. In the first half, Celta didn’t see much of the ball and Real had a dominant yet wasteful first 45 unti they did eventually take the lead in the 37th minute when Mbappe sprinted through Celta’s half and into the box after Ceballos sent the ball to him near the halfway line. He beat Carreira and, from a very close angle, hammered his shot into the net at the near post. Real looked like they were in the driving seat and Celta only had their keeper to thank, or else they could have been down by 2-3 goals.

Goalfest of a second half and extra time

It didn’t take Carlo Ancelotti’s side to take a two-goal advantage in the second half, when Brahim did a great job of delaying the challenge long enough to play the ball through for Vinicius. The Brazilian shot it into the net from right behind the six-yard box, making no mistakes at close range. It was an outstanding counterattacking strategy from Ancelotti’s men that extended their lead to 2-0. Once more, Brahim served as the hosts’ catalyst. After a struggle, he regained possession of the ball, and Celta’s defence were out of position. Villar was way off his line when Vinicius received it, so he chose to take the chip. It appeared to be about to bounce over the line as he got it up and over, but Starfelt was there with an acrobatic clearance to keep it out.

It seemed like game over already when Arda Guler found the back of the net for the third time in the game for Real Madrid but his goal was ruled-off by VAR in the 77th minute when the progressing Vinicius was found offside. However, this time Celta made Real pay for a horrible error made by Eduardo Camavinga as he tried to return the ball after receiving it from Tchouameni, but the pass was not on. Duran grabbed the stray ball and squared it back for Bamba, who hit the side netting with precision from close range to make it 2-1 in the 83rd minute.

In the 91st minute, former Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso equalized for Celta in a valiant comeback from a 2-0 deficit by converting the penalty. That led to the match going to extra time. However, Real Madrid took the lead again thanks to a goal from Endrick, after he came off the bench. With a spectacular shot, Endrick struck the back of the net after a low pass from Guler to his feet that was well received by the Brazilian, who turned and blasted a strong effort from the edge of the area into the bottom corner. Soon after, the fourth goal was scored by Federico Valverde before Endrick scored his second and the fifth for Real Madrid to sink Celta Vigo.

A Copa Del Rey round of 16 clash went to extra time as Real Madrid managed to win the match 5-2 against a brave Celta Vigo side to progress throught to the final eight of the competition.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
