New Delhi: After facing a dismal second-round exit, Daniil Medvedev is set to endure some more trouble as he has been heavily fined for his outburst on the court during his first-round clash at the Australian Open 2025. Medvedev repeatedly smashed his racquet in the nets in frustration and destroyed a camera during his 1st round win against Thailand’s Kasidit Samrej earlier this week.
Medvedev has been fined $76,000 US dollars (approx 65.79 lakh) for his unsportsmanlike behaviour on the court. The Russian fifth seed came from behind to register a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 2-6 victory against world no. 418 Samrej. Medvedev made a strong start in the match but was left frustrated after losing back-to-back sets as Samrej staged a brilliant comeback.
After losing the third set against the Thai, Medvedev lost his cool and smashed his racquet in the nets. He eventually regained his composure to come from behind and clinch the next two sets to wrap up a thrilling victory. Medvedev earned 200,000 Australian dollars for making it to the second round after beating Samrej. However, he was fined heavily for his racquet-smashing act.
Medvedev lost cool again in 2nd round
Medvedev once again lost his cool and let his emotions get the better of him during his second-round clash against American Learner Tien. The Russian 5th seed suffered a crushing 6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 1-6, 7-6 defeat against Tien to bow out of the tournament and was seen throwing his racquet away in frustration during the match.
Medvedev also refused to attend a mandatory post-match press conference after the match and was docked a point for his behaviour. Medvedev entered the tournament as one of the strongest contenders for the title having made it to the final in the Australian Open last year. However, he suffered an early exit after a shock defeat at the hands of 19-year-old Tien in the second round.
This marked Medevedv’s first early exit from a Grand Slam since his first-round defeat at the French Open in 2023.
