New Delhi: Second seed Alexander Zverev edged past American 12th seed Tommy Paul in an absorbing quarterfinal at the Rod Laver Arena. The German ace reached his second successive AO semifinal with a
7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-0), 2-6, 6-1 win in almost four hours.
Zverev and Paul failed to break each other in the tightly-contested first two sets but the German’s experience came through in both tiebreaks.
Paul fought back brilliantly by bagging the third set in a dominating fashion. The American took full advantage of some tired movement from Zverev and won the set 6-2.
However, Zverev showed his class in the fourth set and raced to a 5-0 lead and despite some late fireworks from Paul closed out the match with a 6-1 win in the fourth set.
The victory made Zverev the first men’s singles semifinalist at the season’s first Grand Slam. Earlier, Paula Badosa stunned Coco Gauff to enter the women’s singles semifinal.
