New Delhi: 17-year-old Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre had a fanboy moment as he shared a picture with Indian captain Rohit Sharma. Mhatre dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy clash against Jammu and Kashmir as Rohit played his first domestic match since 2015. He opened the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Elite Group A clash.

The young opener has scored 441 runs in the five matches at an average of 40.09. Mhatre made his first-class debut for Mumbai in October 2024 and notched up two centuries and fifty. He was in stunning form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, amassing 458 runs at an average of 65.42. He smashed 181 runs against Nagaland and then followed it up with another sensational 148-run knock against Saurashtra.

He took to Instagram and wrote, “Started playing cricket by watching him bat on television to sharing a dressing room with my idol was such an unreal moment. Lots of learning to take forward”.

The Indian skipper failed to score runs in both the innings of the match. He scored 3 runs in the first innings and amassed 28 runs in the second innings against Jammu and Kashmir. Rohit has been struggling to score runs in the red-ball cricket since the home Test series against Bangladesh.

Shardul Thakur, Tanush Kotian rescue Mumbai

Mumbai’s star-studded batting line-up flopped against J&K bowlers. Likes of Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer and Shivam Dube all failed to contribute with the bat but Shardul rescued his team from the troubling position and notched up his second first-class century at Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC in Mumbai on January 24. Mumbai were 274 for 7 at stumps on day 2, taking a 188-run lead. Shardul forged an unbeaten 173-run partnership with Tanush Kotian for the eighth wicket. Kotian was batting at 58 while Shardul was batting at 113 at stumps. Both batters will look to add few more runs on Day 3 of the match.

Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre penned a heartfelt message for his idol, Rohit Sharma, after getting an opportunity to share the dressing room with the Indian captain.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
