New Delhi: David Gaskell, the youngest player in Manchester United history, passed away at the age of 84. In October 1956, at the age of sixteen years and nineteen days, former goalkeeper Gaskell made his United debut against Manchester City. After being elevated to the main squad by Matt Busby, he played for United for 11 seasons and won two league titles. In the 1963 FA Cup final, Gaskell also played a part in United’s victory over Leicester City at Wembley.
Gaskell, who was then United’s fifth choice keeper, made his debut as a teenager in an unusual situation during the 1956 Charity Shield. He had originally gone to the game at Maine Road as a spectator. Starting goalkeeper Ray Wood was injured during the match, and Gaskell was taken from the crowd and handed a team-mate’s boots in order to play. Gaskell was awarded man of the match after United won 1-0. Gaskell played for teams in South Africa and Kuwait before leaving United for Wigan Athletic in 1968 and joining Wrexham in 1969.
