Premier League 2024/25: Liverpool dominate, as Arsenal and Newcastle take all three points

New Delhi: With the title race tightening, matchday 23 in the Premier League began with many exciting fixtures being played on Saturday night with the highlight of the weekend being Manchester hosting Chelsea. Before the big game, five games were played on Saturday at the same timeframe. The top two teams of the table, Liverpool and Arsenal were pitted for relatively easier fixtures.

Nottingham Forest were separated from the Gunners by just one point and the two sides have been contenders for the title, though Liverpool were clear at the top by six points. Table bottom-most side hosted Newcastle United who were coming to the weekend clash after Bournemouth broke the Magpies’ 12 unbeaten streak across competitions. Brighton and Hove Albion hosted Everton who were being led by David Moyes in his landmark 700th Premier League game.

Brighton and Hove Albion 0-1 Everton

In David Moyes’s milestone game, Everton were cautious against Brighton with both sides making little display in the first half. Right before the break, the Toffees earned a penalty with Iliman Ndiaye ensuring that took the lead after he rolled the ball into the bottom corner. Jordon Pickford was barely tested by the hosts as they produced just four shots with none landing on target.

Seagulls came back from the break much more aggressively as they kept challenging the Merseyside club with Kaoru Mitoma causing trouble down the right side of the pitch. Georginio Rutter came the closest to scoring when he had a loose ball in the just outside the box but his efforts went past the post as Everton secured important three points in the game.

Liverpool 4-1 Ipswich Town

After winning their first Premier League game of 2025 last weekend, the Reds were in no mood to take their foot off the throttle when they faced Ipswich Town. Dominik Szoboszlai gave the hosts an early lead at Anfield when he shot from Ibrahim Konate’s through ball from 20 yards into the bottom-right corner. At the 35th minute Mohamed Salah, the league’s top scorer, scored from Cody Gapko’s cross. Gapko himself got on the sheet just nine minutes later as Liverpool went into the break 3-0.

Gapko registered his brace in the 66th minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold curled a brilliant cross. It briefly sparked more pressing from the Tractor Boys with Jacob Greaves delivering the first goal for the visitors at the 90th minute when Julio Enciso crossed from the corner. However, it was clearly too little too late as Liverpool, maintained their six-point lead at the top of the table.

Southampton 1-3 Newcastle United

Southampton gave an early setback to Newcastle when Jan Bednarek headed in the 10th minute from James Bree’s amazing cross. However, before the half-an-hour mark in the game, Alexander Isak equalized with a spot-kick. Four minutes later, Isak scored his second when Jacob Murphy intercepted in the midfield and made a perfect pass to his Swedish teammate, to end the first half on lead.

Six minutes after the game resumed, Sandro Tonali found the back of the after Anthony Gordon judged his pass to perfection, having enjoyed a great outing in the game. Collecting three points in the game helped Newcastle to climb the table tentatively to third place as they managed to keep the Saints from scoring again and maintained their amazing record against the hosts.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-1 Arsenal

It was an entertaining first half despite none of the teams managing to break the deadlock. Wolverhampton Wanders’ defence mistakes could have been costly as Arsenal had an early opportunity which the Gunners missed. Arsenal dominated in possession and had the most touches inside the Wolves’ box. Wolves on the other hand failed to register a single shot on target during the first half.

Arsenal came back from halftime fielding just ten men in the pitch after Myles Lewis-Skelly got a Red card in the 43rd minute. 70 minutes into the game, Wolves lost the advantage of having all 10 of their players in the field when Joao Gomes earned his second yellow card. Riccardo Calaffiori rose to the occasion as he found the back of the net in the 74th minute. Taking all three points means that they are still alive in the race towards the trophy.

Bournemouth 5-0 Nottingham Forest

It was a surprising turn of events for Nottingham Forests in back-to-back games as they were again on the back foot for most of the game. Justin Kluivert gave them an early lead in the ninth minute when Tyler Adams passed him in their half and saw his teammate make a run without Forest giving any resistance. The first half though remained uneventful with neither side getting much into the offensives.

Bournemouth scored their second goal in the 55th minute with Dango Ouattara picking perfectly Kluivert’s cross into the back post. Six minutes later, it was again Ouattara who made a run and ensured a perfect finish, scoring from Adams’s second assist of the night. Ouattara’s hat-trick came in the 87th minute. Antoine Semenyo scored the final goal of the night for Bournemouth with Tavernier getting the assist.

Liverpool take a 4-1 win against Ipswich Town at the Anfield as Nottingham Forest is left shocked with a 5-0 loss to Bournemouth. Newcastle sneak three points with a 3-1 win over Southampton.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
